I saw a tree dancing in the wind, and it said to m I saw a tree dancing in the wind, and it said to me, ‘I’m not doing this to entertain you, but to remind you of what life is - a dance in the wind!
- Michael Bassey Johnson

Sometimes, when the wind blows, and the storms come, we forget that we can still give ourselves permission feel alive.

With breast cancer, there are many feelings that are contradictory but are felt simultaneously.

Fear and joy
Gratitude and victimization
Happy and sad
Alive and survivors guilt
Strong and weak

These are just a few examples. There are many more. My hope for survivors, previvors, thrivers and for myself is that when life gets windy, we always remember to dance in the wind.

Each painting I do on a woman is unique to her sto Each painting I do on a woman is unique to her story. Today, I am sharing my painting on Michelle. A previvor.

A previvor is a person who has a genetic disposition to get breast cancer. This means her chance of getting breast cancer is severely elevated.

Women with genetic dispositions for breast cancer will often have a mastectomy as a method to prevent getting cancer. I am always in awe of people who make this decision. It’s an incredibly difficult one. There are so many different pieces to consider.

That is why I painted a mosaic on Michelle. To represent all the different aspects of making a decision like this.

If you are interested in being painted and photographed, I have an opening tomorrow around 4pm. Please DM me for details!

Why do I have multiple lenses in my camera bag? Why do I have multiple lenses in my camera bag?

Just like in writing, story telling with photos needs details. As photographers we need to show the big picture AND also help the viewer focus on the details we want them to know.

In this case, I am using my 105mm macro lens to show the details of a post mastectomy breast reconstruction. (More details on this a few posts back if you are interested to read more).

What lenses do I keep in my bag? 35mm 58mm 85mm 105mm and sometimes a 24-70mm. These allow me to tell a complete story on any shoot. And of course I use all @nikonusa lenses on my #nikonz6 and #nikonz9

When we think of healing we think of it having a s When we think of healing we think of it having a starting and an ending point.

“When I am healed, I will have more energy.”

“When I am healed, I will be happier.”

“When I am healed, I will forget about all the things that happened to me.”

Not true. None of it. Yes, healing brings more peace, positivity & joy, but healing isn’t about forgetting or putting everything in the past.

Healing is about learning how to move forward with the experiences life has given. We can’t, and we shouldn’t forget our hard times. Instead, It’s about using your painful moments and traumas to sculpt you in to the most authentic you possible.

Healing is the ability to move forward in peace with these hard life experiences. Not to leave them behind or forget them. They are a part of you.

Therefore, healing doesn’t have an ending. Healing isn’t linear either.

Healing is messy and chaotic at times.

Healing is also beautiful and peaceful.

Healing is one of the hardest things I have ever practiced. I’ve learned to get comfortable with healing. I’ve learned to live in the pain. I know the pain is where the healing actually lives and I know it’s something I will be working on forever.

If you are healing, know you aren’t alone. I know it’s hard, but all things worthy are.
